South Dakota now requires electric vehicle owners to pay an annual $100 fee when they register their vehicles each year, in addition to regular license fees. The money collected goes into the state highway fund. This fee applies to battery-powered cars and trucks designed for public roads but excludes electric motorcycles.
The amendment changed the annual fee from "fifty" to "one hundred" dollars and tightened the electric vehicle definition to require the electric motor be the "only source of propulsion."
The electric motor vehicle annual fee increased from fifty dollars to one hundred dollars, and the bill's language was updated from engrossed to enrolled format with minor grammatical revisions.
