Sign Language permit eligibility requirements. The American Sign Language permit is issued to an applicant who: (1) Receives a score of intermediate or Level 3 or higher on the Sign-Language Proficiency Instrument (SLPI), or receives certification from the American Sign-Language Teachers Association (ASLTA); and (2) Completes six semester hours of coursework including understanding deaf cultures and understanding American Sign Language grammar.
