This bill allows registered nurses and licensed practical nurses to work on ambulance crews alongside or instead of emergency medical technicians, expanding who can provide emergency care during ambulance runs. The bill also creates liability protections for these nurses when they serve on ambulances and allows nurse practitioners and physician assistants to supervise ambulance services in addition to doctors. These changes update South Dakota's ambulance requirements to recognize nurses' qualifications in emergency medical care.
