South Dakota is updating which federal motor carrier safety regulations it follows by adopting the versions of those regulations that were in effect on January 1, 2026, instead of whatever older version was previously adopted. The bill also clarifies that these federal safety rules apply to both interstate and intrastate trucking operations in South Dakota, with some exceptions for smaller trucks and those carrying fewer passengers, and specifies that drivers must be at least 21 years old for interstate or hazmat hauling but only 18 for other driving.
This bill does not directly amend codified state law.
