South Dakota currently allows election officials to destroy voted ballots and poll books 60 days after a nonfederal election, but this bill extends that deadline to 22 months for all elections—both federal and nonfederal. The bill also establishes a new 22-month retention period for municipal election materials that must be kept by the municipal finance officer. This longer retention period gives more time for election audits, recounts, or legal challenges before materials are destroyed.
