and maintenance of directional and official signs. In urban areas the department may allow the erection and maintenance of directional and official signs and notices which are visible from the main-traveled way within 660 feet of the right-of-way. Outside urban areas the department may allow the erection of such signs both within and beyond 660 feet of the right-of-way.
