South Dakota would temporarily ban the manufacture, sale, and distribution of cell-cultured protein (lab-grown meat) from July 2026 through June 2031. Violating this ban would be a Class 2 misdemeanor, and the state health department could shut down food establishments that sell such products and revoke their licenses. The ban excludes proteins made through fermentation or used in pharmaceuticals and vaccines.
